Committed to a sustainable future while honoring our Family’s past.

About Us

Our Story

Ballew Farms is more than a family farm—we’re creating a future where farmers across Kentucky have the support they need to thrive. Our vision is to become a central hub for training, resources, and community, helping farmers of all backgrounds grow their businesses and connect with each other.

Stronger Together

We’re excited to begin forming a hub that will bring farmers together to share resources, pool knowledge, and open up new opportunities for growth. By working together, we can strengthen our farming community and make a bigger impact.

Holistically Together

Our focus is on hands-on learning and sustainable practices. We’ll continue to offer training in everything from planting crops and managing livestock to applying for funding, improving farm business skills, and navigating markets. We’re committed to supporting small-scale farmers and farmers of color, empowering them to succeed and sustain their farms for generations.

Achieving Together

Ballew Farms, we’re not just growing food—we’re growing a stronger, more connected farming community, and we can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together!

Our History

Welcome to Ballew Farms!

Nestled in the heart of Richmond, KY, Ballew Farms isn’t just a family farm—it’s a living testament to four generations of grit, determination, and an unbreakable bond with the land. Our story began in the 1930s, with the vision of Lester Ballew, the youngest of 12 children born to a former slave. Lester’s dreams were as vast as the Kentucky fields he worked, and through relentless dedication, he carved out a future in Madison County, purchasing land to create a sustainable way of life for his family. From humble beginnings, Lester built a legacy of hard work and resilience, which still echoes across our fields today.

Now, the torch has been passed down to Lester’s grandsons, Lonzo and Leroy Ballew, and to Angel Ballew, Lonzo’s daughter, who carry on the spirit of their grandfather. Together, we cultivate a diverse range of crops and livestock, from soybeans, hay, and wheat to cattle, poultry, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. But for us, farming is about more than just growing food—it’s about growing a future. Our commitment to sustainable farming practices focuses on soil conservation, environmental stewardship, and fostering a thriving community for generations to come.

At Ballew Farms, we pride ourselves on being active members of the agricultural community. It’s not just about what we harvest, but who we help along the way. We work closely with local farmers, organizations like the USDA and NRCS, and agricultural partners to share knowledge and resources that strengthen the farming community. We believe that by working together, we can help build a healthier, more sustainable future—not just for Eastern Kentucky, but for farming as a whole.

So, whether you’re here to learn more about our practices, support our mission, or simply explore the beauty of the farm, we invite you to join us in celebrating a legacy built on family, dedication, and a deep respect for the land. Thank you for visiting Ballew Farms—where the past and future of farming come together to grow something extraordinary.

We’re not just growing crops. We’re growing relationships, and together, we’re nurturing the future of agriculture!
